Reservatrol
Reservatrol is a plant derived compound, most familiarly found in grapes. The plant produces it in response to attacks from fungus or bacteria. Its anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties were discovered in lab experiments conducted on mice and rats. These experiments also showed that resveratrol has a positive effect on cancer cells (i.e., killing them) and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia/diabetes).For humans, studies have shown that a high amount is needed to produce similar positive effects, which is why it's important to compare different supplements, as some have higher concentrations of the active ingredient than others. Drinking red wine, which has been shown to have positive effects on cardiac health, is not practical in terms of obtaining a beneficial amount of resveratrol, hence the need for supplements.
Intriguing studies, done in fish, mice and fruit flies, have demonstrated that resveratrol has life extending properties, though exactly how this works is not fully understood, though some studies indicate activity at a cellular level. Similar studies have been performed investigating the effects of resveratrol on metabolism and age-related changes within the brain. A study in Finland demonstrated an increase in the metabolism of human subjects, bur more studies need to be completed before we know more about human resveratrol dosages and effects.
In addition to grapes (with red wine having the highest concentration), resveratrol is also found in Japanese knotweed, mulberries, raspberries, blueberries and peanuts. These plants produce it, in effect, as an immune response against invading fungi and bacteria.
All the preliminary studies have been promising enough for Reservatrol to be given investigational status by the FDA under the Orphan Drug Act (which was created to promote the development of products "that demonstrate promise for the diagnosis and/or treatment of rare diseases or conditions"), so much more will be learned about the benefits of this compound.
